Sedro-Woolley to Anacortes, WA - day 47

We biked 47 miles today - started out as a gloom and foggy day but the sun came out shortly after arriving in Anacortes.

Today is the day we have been looking forward to since we left Dorchester on May 17th, 2010. This is the last day of our planned route. We headed for Anacortes from Sedro-Woolley, WA. A ride of only about 30 miles - should be an easy day. We were surprised right from the start that the terrain was very flat and we were biking through very fertile farm land. Although it was foggy we could see very lush potato fields and crops growing on each side of the road. We rode for about 25 miles before we stopped at the Farmhouse Cafe near Anacortes for breakfast. We split a Farmhouse skillet between the two of us (it was huge) and really had a wonderful breakfast. After sharing our breakfast with each we continued on highway 20 and the Tommy Thompson bike path all the way to the ferry harbor where you board the ferry that will take you to the San Juan Islands. We biked down to the ferry landing and asked one of the parking lot attendants where we could go to get down to the shoreline to dip our bike tire in the ocean. He said, "no problem, follow me" - he locked his security gate and showed us the way down to the shoreline - he actually helped John carry the bike down to the shore and then took our pictures for us. He was a very nice young man and very pleasant to visit with.

After checking out the schedule for tomorrow and buying a ticket for the ferry to go to the San Juan Islands we headed back to the Ship Harbor Inn and booked a room for two nights. We then did laundry and made a number of calls to let our family and friends know that we made it to our final bike destination. After finishing laundry we biked back down the long hill into town to pick up groceries for tonight and tomorrow.

Tomorrow morning we will board the ferry with our bike and tour the San Juan Islands and we are also going to check into the ferry to go to British Columbia. Our plans are to pick up our truck on Wednesday and then drive up to Washington Pass (Yes, DRIVE - not bike it again) and take time to enjoy the incredible views from the Cascade Mountains. From there we will head to Eugene, Oregon to spend an evening with Ryan, Darcy, Jackson, Stacy, and Sonja. On Saturday we will head to Ashland, Oregon and spend two days with Don and Cathy before we head towards Wisconsin and home.

Total miles biked as of today is 2,931 miles to our destination of Anacortes

  2. We wanted to offer our official congratulations on the blog. We enjoyed every post and were always nervous when you missed a day. We learned a great deal about the parts of the country you biked, the interesting people you met but most of all we learned about you two. You set a goal and didn't just talk about it-you accomplished it. It was with this journey that you taught us what it means to be alive. You are adventure cycling!

  3. Gary, I remember when you and Marilyn came to our home and we showed you the Adventure Cycling Map and you said "wow, they are serious - they have the maps". So it's because of that comment we knew we had to do it.

  4. Hi, John and Kathi! Congratulations on finishing your tour! We met you in Havre, MT as we were biking from Seaside, OR to ME. At the time we met, we were planning on Bar Harbor as our ultimate destination but later switched to Portland, ME - where we arrived on 10/13/10. Happy trails! Warm regards, Becky & Riley Newman
