Day 21 - Westfield, NY to Hamburg, NY 6-11-2011

We got up at 5:30 this morning and after packing up biked downtown Westfield to the Main Diner which has been a restaurant for 65 years and had been an old box car originally.  They have added on to it but it was really a cute little restaurant to eat at with very good food.

After eating we headed out of Westfield around 7:00AM.  It was a fairly uneventful day other than we had three bicyclist come up beside us (they were on there every Saturday morning ride) and bike with us for a couple of miles and told us more about the area.  They were very nice and also interesting to talk with.  Unfortunately a big hill came along and we got left behind but we had been able to keep up with them on the flats.  We also came upon a big old turtle that was walking across the road.  The turtle was covered with mud so I am assuming that she had just laid eggs in the sand.  We really bicycled along some beautiful scenery today with a lot of wooded areas and homes on Lake Erie.  Around 10:00AM we stopped the bike and got our rain jackets out because it started to rain an we debated on stopping somewhere until it passed but decided to keep on going.  It was really just a light rain and certainly not stormy or windy.

At 11:30 we were biking down the road and we smelled a grill.  Boy, were we excited when we came upon a sign that said "Chicken & Ribs BBQ - Saturday, June 11th from 12:00 to 6:00PM.  The dinner was being put on by a Episcopal church and so we ate and took off before they tried to convert us.  We had barbecue ribs and chicken, bake beans, potato salad, watermelon, and a cookie along with a can of soda for $11.00 each.  Last summer when we were biking west we had hoped to get in on a grilled chicken dinner but never came across one.  So we were happy to find this one today.

After lunch we only had 5 miles to bike to check into the Comfort Inn in Hamburg.  After checking in I went for a swim and then we got dressed and went to 4:00PM mass at St. Peter and Paul's Roman Catholic Church.  From there we went to the laundry mat and then out for dinner at Pizza Hut.

Tomorrow we will be bicycling to Buffalo, New York and then crossing over into Canada to see Niagara Falls on the Canadian side.  We will be staying at the Hampton Inn North (two miles from Niagara Falls) an then bicycling back to the US on Monday.  I am going to shut my phone off while we are in Canada due to the high cost for international calls.  I am hoping to have Internet tomorrow night but not sure if I will or not.  Once we are back in the US I will turn my cell phone back on.

Tomorrow is our grandson, Hayden's 8th birthday.  Hayden, we are so proud of you and love you very much and we hope that you have a wonderful birthday.

Happy trails!

Outside of the Main Diner with John on the left getting ready to head out for the day!

View of Lake Erie

Turtle slowly walking across the road - that's about how fast we go on some of these uphills!

Two of the three bikers that bicycled with us for a few miles - they were very informative about the area and we enjoyed visiting with them.

Serenity - no cars and just the two of us biking along!

Oh my, we got so excited when we saw this sign!  lol

HMMMM - doesn't that look delicious!  Really it wasn't as good as John's grilling but it was still very tasty!

We were one of the first to be in line and start to eat so we could get to our hotel and get cleaned up!

We went to 4:00PM mass in Hamburg, NY
